METRONET gantry cranes seeking names

Community members from Victoria Park through to Beckenham are invited to help name the custom-built gantry cranes that will build the elevated rail for the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level

Community members from Victoria Park through to Beckenham are invited to help name the custom-built gantry cranes that will build the elevated rail for the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project in Perth.

Open to anyone who lives, studies or works in the project area, the naming competition provides the community with the opportunity to get involved in this transformational project.

Everyone who enters a pair of names goes into the draw to win one-of-five family tickets to the Perth Royal Show.

A colouring-in competition being offered to local students also provides another chance to get involved and win a prize.

Tasked with lifting the beams and concrete structures into place along the elevated rail, each gantry crane can lift 120 tonnes.

A pair is required to operate together for the project’s maximum lift of 140 tonnes.

These four-wheel giants are designed to minimise the project’s footprint and help retain more trees and vegetation along the rail corridor.

The competition closes September 10. More details can be found here.

Transport minister Rita Saffioti said the gantry cranes would be prominent fixtures during the METRONET construction, so it was fitting for them to get their own names and for the community to choose.

“These cranes play an integral part in the construction of this project and have been custom designed to ensure as many trees as possible are retained while the elevated rail is built,” she said.

“They will also help minimise disruptions to residents, as they will move progressively along the rail corridor.

“I’m keen to see lots of entries from the local community – they’ll become well known in the community once they arrive on site early next year and start transforming the rail corridor.”
